The Magic Apostrophe prequels came about almost by accident – they began with “Gwydion and the Flying Wand” when Pont Books commissioned a book for younger children (“The Magic Apostrophe” series was aimed at 8-12 year-olds).  The prequels tell the story of 10 year old Gwydion, who is apprenticed to the Magician, Merlin, to learn how to be a wizard.  Then, while I was writing “Dragonson” I realised that I needed a dragon – but one hadn’t appeared in the two earlier “Magic Apostrophe” books - so I wrote “Magic Maldwyn” and created Bugsy the baby dragon.  Then I decided Betsan also deserved a book – she’s as feisty and determined as any boy – and rather more adventurous, so she has her own story “Betsan the Brave”.  “Gwydion’s Quest” was written for fun, and if you read it you’ll realise that there may just possibly be a fifth prequel book…  “Gwydion’s Beginnings” is an omnibus e-edition of the first three, thanks to permission from Pont to produce them as an e-book for Kindle.

The Magic Apostrophe” was my first ever book for children.  It’s about Tanith, who is nearly 13.  On her birthday Tanith discovers that her mother – and her six aunts – are all witches, and she is about to become one herself.  Her birthday presents include a pure white kitten named Gwydion – who is a shape-shifter and a young Wizard.  Coincidentally – or is it? – a new girl joins Tanith’s class.  Her name is Astarte Perkins and she has one blue eye and one brown eye.  She is not destined to be Tanith’s BFF…  Their adventures continue in “The Island of Summer” (short-listed for the Tir na n-Og Award) in which Tanith travels back through time into medieval-Wales.  In what was intended to be the final part, “Dragonson” (also short-listed for the Tir na n-Og) we discover why Gwydion has been called by that name during the previous two books.  There’s a seriously scary new baddie in this book, too.  Her English name is “Spiderwitch”…

Thanks to Pont Books giving their permission to produce “The Magic Apostrophe,”  “ The Island of Summer”, and “Dragonson” as e-books: they are available as “The Books of Gwydion”  on Amazon Kindle .

Although “Dragonson” was supposed to be the last part, so many people (children AND adults) kept asking for more.  So I began again.  “Who, Me?” (also short-listed for the Tir na n-Og Award)  and its sequel “Me and My Big Mouth” take Tanith to Ireland for more adventures, yet another new baddie, and “Dragons and Decisions” rounded off the “Magic Apostrophe” series…

…except it didn’t.  I needed to know what would happen when Tanith and Gwydion grew up, and in the final three parts (yes, really!) I found out.  And that’s the end.  Except (yet again) it wasn’t.  Which is where “The Jellyfish, the Dragon and the Witch” comes in.

…and here they are:  three books starring my five grandchildren as well as Aunty Ta’nith and her sisters, Cariad and all the other usual suspects as well as unicorns and dragons.  All three books begin and end in Aberaeron, where my whole family had a wonderful holiday together.  Halfway through, Tove and Catrin decided that, because I am a writer and also their Granny, I should write a book about our holiday.  So I did.  But as regular readers of my books will know, I rarely write single books:  they turn into trilogies, and in the case of “The Magic Apostrophe” trilogy, it’s now a trilogy in eighteen parts.  Mathematics was never my strong point…  And when I had finished “Silent Dragon” I realised that I had left a big, fat, loose end – that fortunately Dylan hasn’t noticed yet..
